Microsoft IIT Hire Meet

Last week I went to Hyderabad to this “IIT Hire Meet” of Microsoft. It sort of sucked. They called all IIT students hired by Microsoft Indian Development Center. Yes, they had hired me as well. In December when placements started in IITK, Microsoft was the first CS company to hire students. I didn’t plan to sit for their first exam, but my friend woke me and asked me to take the test for the sake of practice. I did that. Though I was sure I wouldn’t get selected (considering that I had a bad fight (about Open Source community infringing some patents) with them just 1 months back when they came here for Microsoft Day, and the same HR lady came for placements as well.). Anyways Arun called me (otherwise I wasn’t very keen to know the result) and informed that I have cleared first round. The next round was just after 15 minutes and I didn’t have clothes and hadn’t had bath. That was a fun day. I was finally selected. I was 1 of the 4 selected from UG students. I then wanted to join Microsoft. I think it would have been cool to have an experience to see them working. And anyways since I am fan of some of their products it would have been cooler.

Anyways, for this meet, they sent me flight tickets etc. They planned everything. I was pretty much busy (by “busy” I mean that I had only 15 minutes to prepare for this long journey. Thanks to Kamal for taking care of rest of the things.). I didn’t  even look at the schedule, and started my journey. It was a 4 day tour. Thursday, spent for journey. Sunday, spent for journey as well ( I anyways hate chairs, whether it is train or flight, considering the leg space they give is never enough for me). And the rest 2 days were sheer waste of time as well. On Friday they talked about what they do at IDC. Believe me I can summarize all that in 1 page. I don’t know what was the point of having 6 hour meet for that stuff. Saturday, they took us to “Ramoji Film City”. That was fun, but the journey was so tiring. 4 hour journey for 4 hour show. Yes, the guest house was good. Of course, they spent lot of money, but that doesn’t mean that it was any good. After this meet, I seriously feel good that I am (with probability 75%) not joining Microsoft. (I most probably be joining a Grad School). They effing didn’t have any value for my precious time (I give hell lot of importance to my time). I know how much I could have done in these 4 days. I mean for fucks sake, 4 days at this time of semester is crucial, the crucial days for any IITian, considering its the time when we spend more than 15 hours a day completing our Course projects,  BTech Projects and Mtech Thesis. In the emails they said they have surprises for each day. “Ramo ji” was one surprise. At least this is what they say, (we figured that before going :D ). I don’t know what was the other surprise. Well, Kanpur is sort of remote place, so traveling is usually bad, but there were clear better ways.

Apart from that, I have to say Hyderabad sucks. Everything is so far away, and traffic ain’t any cool. I have been there 2 times now, and each time I had sort of bad time.

  1. dude, didn’t they ask u for the dates etc? You shouldn’t have gone anyway..I mean, good trip or bad trip, you were always going to lose out on those 4 semester days.

  2. I assumed it would be worth. When someone invite, I assume that he understands the value of my time. And he understands that it should be worth it. Specially when they said that its really going to be awesome. It just shows how foolish it was at their part.
